Types of Crates for Your Pet

If you are looking for a crate for your pet, there are many types of crates from which you can choose. Below are are the 5 common types of pet crates.

1. Solid Plastic Crates
These crates are recommended for transporting pets by air or land. Solid plastic crates are very sturdy, keeping pets safely enclosed while traveling. If you travel with your pet by car, keep your pet in a solid plastic crate for security. This way, if you are ever in an accident, your pet has some level of protection. Solid crates, however, are not foldable, so if you are not using them, they can take up a lot of space.

2. Aluminum Crates
These crates are either foldable or fixed. They may be very lightweight, but aluminum crates make great pet enclosures because they are strong when they have adequate bracing. Aluminum crates are impervious to rusting too. Your pet will have good airflow if you keep him in an aluminum crate. He will also be able to see what's happening outside from inside the crate. Aluminum crates are typically used in veterinary hospitals, and they are great pet enclosures when you're traveling. In addition, you can use an aluminum crate as a permanent "den" for your pet at home. If you breed dogs, you can use aluminum crates for kennels.

3. Dog Tents
These crates are an alternative to soft crates for pets. Similar to soft crates, dog tents are very light and fold very small so they are highly portable. If you don't have a lot of space in your car for a much sturdier crate for your pet to use when you reach your destination (e.g., camp site), you can take a dog tent with you. Stuff it in a bag and then open it up when you get to your destination. Dog tents are not recommended to keep in puppies or dogs that are not housebroken. They are also not to be used for transporting pets.

4. Soft Crate
Lightweight and foldable, soft crates give pets a strong sense of security. These crates also give ample airflow and visibility. It is not advisable to use soft crates to contain dogs that tend to chew or dig.

5. Wire Crates
Wire crates are much like aluminum crates in that they are foldable and easily stored away when not in use. Wire crates are also wonderful for containing pets while traveling (although these crates are a lot heavier compared to the other types of crates). Wire crates provide good airflow and visibility to pets. Kennels and veterinary hospitals are some places where you'll often see wire crates being used. Dog shows are another place where wire crates are commonly used because they give spectators a good view of the different dogs. Wire crates can be made more comfortable and safe for pets with pads and covers.
